    #flight demonstration    #thrust vectoring    #tail slide
X-31 flight demonstration showing rapid change in yaw during turn due to thrust vectoring. Then into a tail slide.

    #experimental pitot tube
Pre-flight of the experimental pitot tube.

    #Kiel probe
On the final flight the pitot tube had been replaced with a Kiel probe. The Kiel probe was intended to give more accurate airspeed indication at high angle of attack, but it was more vulnerable to icing. This was especially true on the version used on the X-31, which did not have a deicing mechanism.

    #Heads Up Display
Airspeed anomalies begin to show. The view through the Heads Up Display (HUD) highlights the anomaly.

    #Video of X-31 crash
    Video of X-31 crash.

    #X-29 program
On the earlier X-29 program, they had similar revisionary modes, but they switched to them and flew them around on each flight whereas on the X-31, none of the alternate modes had been used in flight.

#display from the 1995 Paris Airshow
Thrust vectoring display from the 1995 Paris Airshow. To make this airshow, the X-31 was flown inside a C-5A Galaxy.

X-31 Thrust Vectoring NASA Project - Breaking the chain

The X-31 is a German-American experimental reaction aircraft developed by Rockwell firms and MBB to study the gain in maneuverability offered by a thrust vector associated with electric flight controls to keep control of the device at very high impact. This is currently the test program with the most comprehensive research on vector thrust. The X-31 is also the first device of the series of X-planes to have been flown by a non-US test pilot.
